Ubuntu in a Marvel Comic
Jul 26th, 2007 by Tim
Ubuntu is featured in issue #4 of the Marvel Comic Mighty Avengers.
You can see the boot manager GRUB and the list of Kernels to choose from, along with a movie-style “Access Denied” message:
Normally this isn’t the point where you have to authorize in Ubuntu, and you could just use recovery mode to go to a root shell, but hey, it’s free software so they could have just modfied it to act like this.

Uhh.. it’s a drawing. They could make Tux walk out of the screen if they wanted.
It’s always nice when you take the time to write up an article about whatever and the only reader feedback you get is from someone who shouldn’t be allowed to interact with people.
Having said that, thanks for posting this. It always nice to see Linux pop up in comics and whatnot…
Cheers,
Charles
Yea, you think they would have gotten the technical parts right, since they know what grub looks like… but oh well, it’s better than nothing!
… Very good eye by the way.
Actually, you can set grub up to require authentication. I don’t know that the ‘access denied’ message would show up as they present it, but considering the fact that the story has things ‘powering up’ the grub screen itself is not out of place.

that good nice
I think the point on the comic books isn’t all about Ubuntu. HEYyyyy guyz come’on !!!! We all use GNU/Linux with some Ubuntu logos.
Let’s not make a distro war over here.
Ah, by the way, I am typing from a KUBUNTU 6.06(LTS).
lol. It’s a comic strip, you nerds
Hahaha, I guess the illustrator was just taking the screenshot from the internet or somewhere and just put it in
Fico!
Veramente bello.

It’s great to see it, even if it doesn’t make any sense. Why is a GRUB screen grounds for panic? I’d like to see this guy sitting beside a Linux admin:
Scientist: What is this?
Linux Admin: It’s a boot menu.
Scientist: Someone’s hacked right into the system!
Linux Admin: What?
Scientist: Someone’s looking for the launch codes!
Linux Admin: What the hell are you talking about?
Scientist: Oh my god!
Linux Admin: Calm down you moron, it’s a boot menu!

One of the main reason why linux and all of it’s distros keep failing all the time with the general public is because geeks and nerds like you think all the people in the world think like you, and thus know all about this or that distro.
Wake up: they don’t!
The artist probably made a drawing of some command line interface because it looks nerdy and complicated (or because drawing a graphical interface like windows or mac took too much time). It might even be a manipulated screenshot. I truely believe it doesn’t matter to him whether he chose ubuntu or ms-dos or some other interface… (assuming that he knows the difference between both ms-dos and ubuntu, which is just a small chance, since the majority of mankind doesn’t). Anyway: it doesn’t matter which one is included for the storyline (remember: it is a *comic*, not a visualised ubuntu manual). the only thing that matters is that there is some computer, that it is hacked and that access is denied.
Just be happy that some artist included some ubuntu-like stuff in his comic. Don’t start a geek discussion over what he /should/ have done or which precise distro it /might/ have been. Instead: try getting yourselves a life or so, and try to think like a common man using a computer, instead of being arrogant by claiming some people shouldn’t be allowed to communicate…
Again, it’s a DRAWING, not a screenshot. And if they DON’T know what it is, maybe they shouldn’t put it onscreen. Maybe they should take the two seconds to ask somebody what it means or make something up that makes sense. You don’t have to be a geek to at least ask somebody in tech if it makes sense. It’s called continuity checking, and it’s a pretty big part of writing stories. It has nothing to do with whether you’re a geek or not.
are you aware that just because its a gurb boot menu and it says kernel x doesn’t mean that its Ubuntu

um, in the third row of screenshots you can see the words ‘ubuntu’ and ‘..untu’ so I’d say it’s ubuntu…
